Demo North innovators

Innovators with global impact have gathered in Norrbotten for a long time, some of them even has their origin in the region. You’ll find a range of innovators who have made a vital impact on our region and Demo North below.

LTU: Founder of the region’s knowledge

Luleå University of Technology (LTU) was founded in 1971 and has been a major contributor to the region’s development ever since. Through attracting companies and supplying highly educated labor to the industries. The university is Europe’s largest within applied sciences, enabling successful collaborations with local enterprises. Shared research results enable continuous development and innovation.

RISE SICOMP & SICS: Leading research and development

RISE is a collection of Swedish research institutes within a variety of areas. SICOMPs area of expertise is production of components in composite materials and their main focus are research and commercialization of materials, processing and production. The SICOMP materials are used by industries such as space and aviation, vehicles, marine and construction. 

SICS North is specialized in communication and ICT technology and has long been on the research frontier in areas such as AI, big data, cloud technology, data processing, data centers and IoT.

HYBRIT: Future of fossil-free steel

HYBRIT is a joint venture between SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, started in 2016. They have endeavored to revolutionize steelmaking, by replacing coking coal, traditionally needed for ore-based steelmaking, with hydrogen. The result will be world’s first fossil-free steelmaking technology with virtually no carbon footprint. A pilot plant was set up during 2018 and the goal is to have a solution ready by 2035.

Sunpine: Renewable diesel

Sunpine is a world leading biorefinery, producing biofuels and other bio-products from residue products from the forestry industry. Their technology is the world’s greenest, reducing emissions by up to 90% – CO2 reduction equivalent to 157 700 diesel cars per year. Through synergies with the regions forestry and using 100% renewable energy, Sunpine aims to scale up production of biofuel in an absolute sustainable way.

Northvolt: Next gen green batteries

To keep global warming below 1.5 degrees, 100 million electric vehicles must be added to our roads globally by 2030. Northvolt was founded in 2016 by Tesla’s former VP and aims to produce the world’s most environmentally friendly batteries and manufacture long-scale.

Facebook: Paving the way for green datacenters

In 2011, Facebook built their datacenter in Luleå, Norrbotten. Their decision to locate here was built on not only a business case, but also a sustainability case. Since the establishment, Facebook have continuously been using the location as a deployment region for new datacenter technology, with the ambition of making datacenters more sustainable and cost efficient.

SSC/Esrange: Pioneers & marathon runners

Sweden’s first and yet only space-base have since its foundation 1966 paved way for Sweden’s place within space and climate research with its tireless efforts. After showing progressivity through earlier co-operations such as NEAT, launches with NASA and JAXA, Esrange have become a center for space research in northern Europe. With the regions technical development, other areas are approaching space research and looking forward to Esrange’s next step.
