The industrial revolution – developed in close collaboration with the Luleå University of Technology

In the coming years, northern Sweden needs to recruit over 20 000 new employees. A big challenge – but a necessity to scale up the green industries. At the center of it all stands Luleå University of Technology, ready to adapt their research and education to meet an increasing need for both traditional research and fast-tracks to additional competencies.

Historically, Luleå University of Technology is one of Sweden’s’ leading universities in engineering. The university is now also at the forefront of competence in artificial intelligence and hydrogen – among others.
– Our research is conducted in close collaboration with large companies and leading international universities. This is one of the keys to success, says Eva Hamilton, Chairman of the Board at Luleå University of Technology.

A hub for AI research
The boom of green industries in the northern part of Sweden requires a lot of innovations. For example, the new depth of the underground mines in the region can reach approximately 2,000 meters where it’s not possible to have people working other than in exceptional cases. Automated mining is therefore developed in a unique collaboration between the University and several large mining companies.
– At the University, we have good technical infrastructure, several different lab environments and existing testing opportunities, says Eva Hamilton.

In addition to AI, Luleå is now becoming a research center for hydrogen. How to store and transport hydrogen is one of today’s biggest questions.
– Hydrogen is about to balance energy by replacing coal in the steel industry. It also works as a battery where we can store energy that can have intermittent production due to the weather, such as wind energy. We are doing a lot of research on how to store and transport hydrogen in the best way possible and Luleå University of Technology is taking a leading position.

New types of education
One of the challenges in this type of expansion that awaits northern Sweden is the need for continuous further education, in addition to traditional education.
– A couple of weeks of further education within an area you already work with is one way to strengthen existing professional knowledge. The University plays an important role in developing northern Sweden for the future, says Eva Hamilton.
