Luleå Municipality
The Luleå region, with its 170,000 inhabitants, is the largest population centre north of the Stockholm region.
Luleå is at the heart of the Luleå region and is the provincial capital of Norrbotten with a population of 75,000. Luleå is a hub for infrastructure in Sweden’s far north and the commercial centre of the entire Barents region. Together with neighbouring municipalities Boden, Kalix, Piteå, and Älvsbyn, we have world-leading basic industries in steel, wood, and paper. They are complemented by a very strong ICT industry and a successful electronics cluster. The Luleå region dominates northern Sweden’s food production and is also home to Sweden’s largest modular home manufacturer.
Scandinavia’s northernmost technological university with about 13,000 students and 1,500 employees is also based in Luleå. World-class research is conducted at Luleå University of Technology in close collaboration with industry. It is the world’s best in mining engineering, metallurgy, and high-performance steel.
Trade in durable goods had strong growth in Luleå during the 2000s. Several national and international businesses are found at the city’s three major shopping areas: Luleå Home Center, downtown Luleå, and Storheden.
One of SSAB’s plants with blast furnaces for producing steel slabs is also located in Luleå. With its 1,350 employees, it is the largest industrial workplace in Luleå. Plannja, Gestamp Hardtech, and Ferruform are other dominant companies in the engineering industry that process steel. There is also metallurgical research institute Sverea/Mefos.
Luleå is Swedish Lapland’s most-visited destination, accounting for about 30% of the county’s tourist revenue. The four seasons help provide exciting tourism products for national as well as international guests. Transportation links are very good. Luleå has great capacity for large meetings, and cost-free service is available through the Luleå Convention Bureau.
