Jokkmokk Municipality

Jokkmokk is an inland municipality with a population of just over 5,000 in the heart of Norrbotten. The municipality has the highest gross regional product per employed thanks to its massive hydroelectric production. One-sixth of Sweden’s hydropower is generated here. The mining industry is also important to the area due to its proximity to Gällivare. Tourism and locally produced foods such as meat, game and berries are growing industries.

The municipality has several large national parks, including Laponia, a World Heritage Site, which together with the Arctic Circle, midnight sun and alpine resorts provide good prospects for the tourism industry and a good quality of life for residents.

Highways E45 and 97 run through the central town. Despite its location, Stockholm is just three hours away via Luleå Airport. Jokkmokk has its own airport for charter flights.

The economy is stable and is based on hydropower and mining, which also feeds into the engineering and construction sectors. Higher education is available through distance learning programs at three different universities and colleges where there are qualified specialists in hydroelectric power. Jokkmokk is also the location of the Sami Education Centre.
