Gällivare Municipality

Gällivare Municipality is centrally located in Norrbotten and has a population of 18,500. Communications are good with its proximity to the E10 and E45 motorways. There are daily connections to Stockholm by air and train. By car it takes about two hours to the Swedish coast as well as to Norway.
The economy revolves around the mining industry, with LKAB and Boliden both having mines in the municipality. The heavy investments made and planned in the mining industry have created a local boom in the municipality with record low unemployment and increased business activities. Employment rose more than 10% in the five years following 2004.
Boliden is investing SEK 6 billion in its Aitik Mine and LKAB will invest SEK 5–6 billion annually (in Gällivare and Kiruna) from 2005 to 2015. These investments and their related activities are the engines driving Gällivare’s economy and growth.
Small businesses in the municipality are among Sweden’s most profitable. The main reason is of course the major investments being made in LKAB and Boliden but also those made in other businesses, local export companies, such as the solar cell industry, and in commerce and tourism.
Because of the mine expansion in Malmberget, Gällivare is undergoing a comprehensive societal transformation in which new housing is being built and a new community is taking shape.
Gällivare as a winter sport area at the foot of Mount Dundret offers skiing up, down or across on high-quality World Cup trails. Combine this with fishing trips, excursions, cultural activities and much more.
