Swerea Mefos researches tomorrow’s steel production.

The Swerea Mefos research foundation in Luleå is world renowned for its research into process metallurgy and metal machining.

We have a unique large-scale pilot facility and the ability to carry out extremely large research projects,” says Göran Carlsson, CEO.

One of Swerea Mefos biggest successes is a new, low carbon dioxide method for making steel that was created through the European ULCOS research project and developed in LKAB’s experimental blast furnace in Luleå.

By leading carbon dioxide back into the furnace emissions can be reduced by up to 80 per cent – an important advance for the steel industry, which is responsible for eight per cent of the world’s total carbon dioxide emissions and has promised to reduce emissions by 50 per cent by 2050.

Swerea Mefos has over 80 employees of whom 40 have university degrees. It carries out applied research, consultancy services and confidential assignment research into metallurgical processes, modelling and simulations and it is developing energy-saving, environmentally friendly technologies for the metal industry.

Swerea Mefos has 39 member companies in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. There are four associated companies in other countries. Operations are financed by members together with the Swedish Steel Producers’ Association, the Swedish Energy Agency and Vinnova. Swerea Mefos is also largely financed from confidential assignment research and the EU coal, iron and steel research fund.
