Arvidsjaur Municipality

Arvidsjaur lies in the centre of Lapland, 420 miles north of Stockholm and 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle.

Arvidsjaur Municipality has a population of 6,599, of which 4,666 live in urban areas.

The Sami people have been living here for thousands of years. The area was not colonized by Swedes until 1757, when the first permanent settlers arrived. Growth was slow initially. The first settlers supported themselves by hunting, fishing, and farming. Later, the dominant source of income was forestry.

Its transformation into a modern information society was quick. The business sector is now dominated by private and public services along with forestry and tourism. The area is also a world-class centre for testing and training in sub-arctic conditions. Many international automotive and component manufacturers test their products here. An area in transition, with many international contacts and rapid advances in technology are some key features of the area today.
