The town of Älvsbyn is the municipal seat and has good communication links. It lies along the main railway line and is about 40 minutes from Luleå Airport and close to the E4 motorway. Electronic communications are also well developed and a new goods terminal is planned.
The largest companies are Polarbröd, one of Sweden’s largest suppliers of bread, and Älvsbyhus, the country’s leading provider of detached houses for the private market. The Vidsel Test Range, where the Armed Forces and Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) collaborate on missile testing and unmanned spacecraft, is located in the municipality, as well as companies and facilities for the automotive industry’s cold climate testing, and a hotel and conference facility.
Älvsbyn is a small municipality with short decision paths and good opportunities for high quality of life close to nature and outdoor activities. Nature reserve Storforsen, with Europe’s largest untamed rapids, is also located here.
