Norrbotten generates business from its natural conditions
Norrbotten’s potential for business opportunities comes largely from the natural conditions that the region develops and utilizes well. The mining industry and steel processing are important pillars supporting the economy, as are the forestry, wood and paper industries. Climatic advantages can be used for cooling server rooms and cold climate testing. Natural geographic conditions are cultivated as hydro power and tourism.
As one of the regions near the Arctic Circle, Norrbotten is characterised by good communication links with a well-developed IT infrastructure, several inter-European motorways, railways, an international passenger and cargo airport, and several regional airports. There is also a thriving technical university that can hold its own internationally in several subject areas and has become known for its good relationships in the business community and its needs-driven research.
Much of Norrbotten is included in various regional development support areas that can facilitate earnings potential in capital investment appraisals. Land and lot prices are relatively low, and it is easy to have constructive dialogues with local politicians and authorities that often can help simplify the establishment of businesses. There is also sufficient access to a well-educated workforce with good language skills.
